In 1973, the Deutsche Bundesbahn introduced the City-D-Zug train class, abbreviated to DC. These two-class express trains were intended to complement the single-class IC system from 1971. On the Frankfurt (M) – Hagen – Münster – Emden line (later partially to Norddeich), all three DC train pairs were operated with carriages in the popular 1970 pop colors.
