The former stars of the DRG were mostly in shockingly poor condition after the Second World War – especially in terms of their streamlined bodywork. After this was removed and refurbished, the Class 01.10 formed an important pillar of high-quality express train service. During various reconstructions and modernizations, but above all the necessary reboiling, a total of 34 locomotives were converted to oil-fired main firing towards the end of the 1950s.
These now more powerful locomotives could now be expected to undertake long-distance runs of up to 700 km. In 1968, the Class 01.10 locomotives were renumbered 011 (coal) and 012 (oil). The last of these 140 km/h (87 mph) and 1,818 kW (1,818 kW) oil-fired locomotives were decommissioned in Rheine in 1975.
