The Bavarian S 3/6, often referred to as the "Queen of Steam Locomotives," carried the brunt of German express train traffic until the advent of the Class 01. Not only was it built until after 1931, but it could also be expected to undertake long-distance journeys that the Class 01 could not endure without being stripped of steam. And anyone who believes that a Bavarian locomotive only ran in Bavaria during the Federal Railway era is mistaken. The Bavarian locomotives pulled just about every train of note.
Although most of the S 3/6 locomotives of series a to c were retired in 1950, it seems realistic that one of these legendary express train locomotives, like some of their younger sisters, earned a DB biscuit and continued to be cherished and cared for as an irreplaceable machine by an enthusiastic locomotive crew.
