BR 10 – The Black Swan of the German Federal Railway.
Although the German Federal Railway (DB) considered steam traction to be a discontinued model, in 1953 the Krupp company in Essen was commissioned to develop a new Pacific express train locomotive. In 1957, two elegant, 26,503 mm long and partially covered examples of the 2'C1' h3 type with a driving wheel diameter of 2,000 mm were delivered under the series number 10. These locomotives differed significantly in their firing method. While class 10 001 was initially equipped with only supplementary oil firing (a conversion took place later), class 10 002 had a main oil firing system from the outset. The two locomotives, embellished with silver-colored decorative lines and equipped with conical smokebox doors, reached a top speed of 140 km/h with an induced power of 1,839 kW. Due to their high axle load, however, the two locomotives were only permitted on certain main lines. Until 1962, they were stationed at Bebra depot, then at Kassel depot, from where they were used in heavy express train service on the north-south route and the Main-Weser Railway. The general structural change with the ever-increasing electrification of the main lines was the main reason why the class 10 did not go into series production. In January 1967, class 10 002 suffered a broken slide rod and was taken out of service. In 1972, it was scrapped at the Offenburg depot. In June of the following year, 10 001 also had to retire from active service with the Deutsche Bundesbahn. However, the 109-ton locomotive was preserved for posterity and can still be viewed today in the German Steam Locomotive Museum in Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg.
