For the 1987 summer timetable, new quality standards regarding rolling stock, speed, and service were established for cross-border InterCity trains. Trains that met these criteria were designated "EuroCity." The EC 24 "Erasmus" connected the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck via Munich and Frankfurt am Main, then along the Rhine via Emmerich with the Dutch capital Amsterdam.
The carriages of this set belong to the core part of the train and were used on the entire route. A special highlight is the dining car from the former TEE "Rheingold" from 1983, which was discontinued precisely at the start of the EuroCity in 1987: On two dining cars, only the orange Rheingold stripe was removed, while the "Restaurant" lettering remained orange, making them interesting "splashes of color" for more than four years, especially on EC trains to the Netherlands.
