The SBB is celebrating 175 years of railways in Switzerland. On August 9, 1847, scheduled passenger service began on the "Spanisch Brötli Bahn" between Zurich and Baden. This marked the beginning of the development of the Swiss railway network.
This historic moment in Swiss railway history will be celebrated with a fitting anniversary annual program. The Swiss Public Transport Association, SBB, Postbus, and the Alliance Swiss Pass have planned a variety of public events in five regions for the celebrations, as well as the official ceremony on August 9, 2022.
Another highlight that draws attention to the anniversary year is the Re 460 series locomotive, designed by ROCO in collaboration with SBB and the artist Gudrun Geiblinger. The anniversary locomotive features two different side designs. On one side, the world-famous "Spanish Bread Railway" commemorates the first railway in Switzerland, and the historic Zurich Central Station exudes the charm of the early railway era. The other side of the locomotive is completely modern: The image shows the Swiss high-speed train ICN exiting the Gotthard Base Tunnel, a masterpiece of the Swiss railway industry.
