At the DR, many of the locomotives that remained in the country after the end of the war were converted to oil firing. Until they were replaced by modern diesel and electric locomotives, the locomotives of the series 44 formed the backbone of the heavy freight train service. Because of their tremendous tractive power, the locomotives were also called "Jumbo". The last "pachyderms" were decommissioned by the DR in 1986.
