The set consists of an express mail car (Hechtwagen), type Post4ü, and a three-axle mail car, type Post3, of the German Federal Post Office, as well as a boxcar, type Gmhs 30, and a boxcar, type Glmhs 50.

Early in railway history Postal administrations used rail to transport mail. Railway mail vans were either individually integrated into passenger trains or included in larger numbers as part of express and freight trains carrying mail. In the postwar period, mail trains were dominated by the rolling stock of the former German Reichspost (German Reich Postal Service) and were formed between major railway hubs. Such mail trains consisted of carriages that, depending on their design, served the transport of letters or parcels. The mail was not only transported in the railway mail vans but also sorted during the journey. Mail that had already been pre-sorted and only needed to be distributed at the destination station was transported in covered freight cars – mostly rented from the DB, but sometimes also in the Deutsche Bundespost's own cars.
