For shunting passenger and freight cars in stations, the German Federal Railway (DB) relied early on on smaller shunting locomotives. A further development of the Köf 11, with power transmission via cardan shafts and additional axle gear, was presented by Gmeinder in 1965. 

251 shunting locomotives of this version, initially designated the Köf 12, were delivered to the DB as the Class 333. In order to save on personnel, a large proportion of the locomotives were equipped with radio remote control from the end of the 1980s onwards. These locomotives were designated the 335 series. The model can only be operated with analogue driving devices to a limited extent.
