Between 1942 and 1950, over 7,000 Class 52 wartime locomotives were built. These were constructed with as little effort as possible, and savings were made on materials wherever possible. Weighing 84 tons, they achieved an output of 1,192 kW and a top speed of 80 km/h.
The German Federal Railway (DB) largely phased out these locomotives by 1953 – they had enough Class 50 and Class 44 locomotives available to haul heavy freight trains. Only a few locomotives, completed in 1945, remained in DB service until 1962.
