The year was 1609: The "Pilgrim Fathers," members of the English Separatist Church, who had come into conflict with the established church due to their strict religious beliefs, had initially fled to the Netherlands to avoid imprisonment. Their intention was now to establish an independent religious and civic community, and such a venture seemed to exist only in the New World.
Aboard the Mayflower, a medium-sized three-masted galleon with a displacement of 180 tons, the Pilgrim Fathers arrived on the shores of Virginia in 1620. There, based on a constitution called the "Mayflower Treaty," they founded an independent citizenry – the nucleus of what would later become the United States of America.
