For a long time, the Class 038 steam locomotives, with their riveted tenders and Witte smoke deflectors, were a familiar sight on German branch lines. There, they mostly hauled passenger trains and were therefore irreplaceable in local service for a long time. Only the increasing modernization of the Deutsche Bundesbahn is initiating the replacement in the form of diesel and electric locomotives.
