From 1928, a total of 520 Class 64 locomotives were put into service. The 90 km/h locomotives were built according to the design principle of the standard steam locomotives, which made the supply of spare parts easier. The locomotives were mainly used on branch lines and for hauling passenger trains and light freight trains.
At the time of the switch to computer numbers on January 1, 1968, the German Federal Railway still had 52 locomotives in its maintenance inventory. In contrast to the DR locomotives, which were primarily used in the northern lowlands, the Bundesbahn's Class 64 locomotives were used exclusively south of the Main line after 64 446 was transferred from the Hamburg-Rothenburgsort depot to the Plattling depot on April 30, 1966.
