From 1976 to 1995, the ÖBB purchased 217 four-axle thyristor locomotives of the 1044 series. These 5,120 kW locomotives, capable of speeds of up to 160 km/h, shaped the modern image of the ÖBB for many years. From 2002, all 1044 series locomotives were equipped with push-pull control. This made the vehicles, now designated 1144, even more versatile.
