In the 1960s, the E 03 series was built, the most powerful electric locomotive to date for use in passenger service on the German Federal Railway. From 1970 to 1974, a total of 145 series locomotives were built and officially designated the 103.1 series. Visually, the 103 series is still considered one of the most beautifully designed electric locomotives today. The locomotives up to operating number 215 were delivered with pantographs.
